https://youtu.be/BFlQR4x-SjoStructural consultancy is built upon the foundational concepts of Functionality, Stability, and Economy as discussed in my previous YouTube Video on "
How to become a Great Structural Consultant". These foundations must then be combined with a systematic workflow of creating, analyzing, and recreating a structure till you reach a point where your structure is not only safe and functional but is also the most economical.
- Functional design: The workflow hence starts with the Functional design of the structure. This design shall either be provided by the client or the architect hired by the client. In both cases, you have the functional design at your disposal.
- Modeling the structural elements like beams, columns, joints, etc.
- Assigning Initial properties which are usually assumed through thumb-rules
- Creating or modifying joint conditions if any like creating hinged support etc.
- Modeling supports upon which the structure is rested
- Assigning the loads on the body.
- Analyzing the structure
- Finding and studying the internal forces and reactions
- Studying the internal stresses
- Initiate the design workflow
- Assigning initial design parameters
- Designing and re-analyzing the structure and its components
- Repeating the design and analysis with updated parameters
- Do the above till a Functional, Safe, and Economical design emerges
The above 14 steps form the workflow of any structural design either done manually or through the use of Structural Analysis Software like STAAD and ETABS.
